Do you know who I ran into today?

3M ESPE is unique in the dental industry in that it’s one of the only brands with wide consumer recognition. We tout a statistic here that 25% of the world’s population comes in contact with a 3M product every day. Whether it’s one of our most visible consumer products, like a Post-it® Note or Scotch™ Tape, or one of our more behind-the-scenes products, like a protective film for smart phones or a reflective material for a highway sign, 3M products are ubiquitous. 

I heard an interesting anecdote about this from a dentist recently. He had told his patient that he would be using a new material from 3M for a procedure, to which the patient responded, “Well, if it’s from 3M, it must be good.” This story got me wondering how we can help dentists better take advantage of the trust that consumers have in the 3M name. I would guess it’s not typical for most dentists to inform patients of the brands they are using, but if you knew it would help patients feel more confident about the procedure, would you change that? Have you ever heard an interesting response from a patient about your use of a 3M product?
